Current Project: First Flame

My most recent project is a middle grade secret history.  I am having so much fun with this story.  I may have discovered that I love writing for this age group.  Why is it so awesome:

  • I have a built in alpha-reader (my own middle-grade child)
  • I am deeply enjoying the research and the history part of this project
  • I am not minding keeping it “clean” for the kiddos
  • I love the perspective of seeing a great historical event from a child’s perspective

What’s a secret history you say?  From Wikipedia: A secret history (or shadow history) is a revisionist interpretation of either fictional or real (or known) history which is claimed to have been deliberately suppressed, forgotten, or ignored by established scholars. Secret history is also used to describe a type or genre of fiction which portrays a substantially different motivation or backstory from established historical events.

The story:

A secret history about a whimsical young boy who is separated from his parents and forced to run away to protect his best friend, a fledgling phoenix, when they are the cause of the Great Fire of 1901 in Jacksonville, FL.
